The boxing community mourns the loss of promising Japanese fighter Kanamu Sakama, who tragically passed away at the age of 20. Sakama was scheduled to fight Hiroki Oki at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on March 18 but withdrew due to ill health just two days before the bout. The specific cause of Sakama’s untimely death has not been disclosed by the Japanese Boxing Commission or local health authorities.

Sakama, who turned professional in 2021, quickly rose through the ranks, remaining unbeaten in his first nine fights with eight victories coming via knockout. His exceptional performance in his debut year earned him the title of all-Japan Rookie of the Year for 2021. In 2023, he clinched the Japanese youth light flyweight title against Ryu Horikawa, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

Sakama’s last two fights, both victories, occurred on undercards featuring Naoya Inoue, Japan’s boxing sensation. His most notable win came against John Paul Gabunilas on December 26, showcasing his potential as a future star in the sport. However, Sakama’s death follows closely on the heels of another Japanese boxer, Kazuki Anaguchi, who died from injuries sustained in a fight last December, highlighting the inherent risks of boxing.

The Japanese Boxing Commission has initiated an investigation into Anaguchi’s death, with findings expected by mid-April. As the boxing community reflects on these tragic losses, discussions about safety protocols and the well-being of fighters are likely to intensify, underscoring the sport's ongoing battle with ensuring athlete safety amidst the quest for glory.
