Last Saturday’s bout saw a moment that has since sparked considerable debate: Oleksandr Usyk was dropped by a potent right hand from Daniel Dubois, striking right on the beltline of Usyk’s trunks. Despite this, Usyk is adamant he would’ve stood up and continued the fight had the referee, Luis Pabon, started a count.
Observers have raised eyebrows, speculating that even if Usyk had managed to get back on his feet, Dubois’ relentless onslaught would’ve swiftly ended the fight. It became notable how Usyk repeatedly sought the referee’s intervention whenever Dubois landed robust body shots, leading some to believe he was appealing for protection from Dubois’ punishing blows.
In the aftermath of that knockdown, Usyk was down for an extended three-minute duration. When action resumed after almost five minutes, he appeared visibly distressed, wilting under every punch Dubois delivered.
Replays showed that Dubois’ controversial punch did land on Usyk’s trunks’ beltline. Interestingly, these trunks were hoisted up, reminiscent of Tyson Fury’s typical style. Though the referee deemed it a low blow, prospects of a rematch seem dim.
Usyk stood firm on his stance, saying to Boxing King Media, “If the referee started to count, I would have definitely jumped up... It would be hard... but there is no doubt that I would be up.” He further lamented the dirty tactics, urging fighters to maintain clarity in the ring.
