Promoter Eddie Hearn has raised the possibility that Anthony Joshua may not be fighting in the anticipated August 12 headliner in the UK. Despite having this date in mind since Joshua’s recent victory over Jermaine Franklin, the lack of a suitable opponent is causing concerns that the former heavyweight champion might have to postpone his summer bout.
Joshua, who had previously alerted his social media followers about the potential of not fighting until December, might find himself featured in a heavyweight supercard organized by Saudi Arabia-based Skill Challenge Promotions. The event, planned for December in the Middle East, may include a Joshua-Wilder fight alongside the anticipated Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk undisputed heavyweight championship.
While Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, and DAZN were hoping to get one more interim fight for Joshua under new trainer Derrick James, a financial impasse between Matchroom and Dillian Whyte has thwarted the potential rematch plans. Hearn chose not to disclose the “four or five relevant, top 15” fighters being considered for the August 12 date, acknowledging the looming seven-week deadline for finding an opponent and marketing the event.
In regards to the rest of Joshua’s 2023 schedule, Hearn expressed confidence about the ongoing talks with the Saudi outfit and the likelihood of a fight with Deontay Wilder. However, he emphasized that the immediate priority is to secure a fight for August 12.
