Two-division lineal champion Teofimo Lopez has underscored his retirement announcement by relinquishing his recently-won WBO junior welterweight title, just five days after defeating Scotland's Josh Taylor. The 25-year-old pugilist stated after his electrifying victory that he was done with boxing, and his actions since then have only affirmed his stance. WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel confirmed Lopez’s decision, stating that the organization respected his decision and would always have an open door for him should he decide to return.
In the event the WBO seeks to fill the vacancy promptly, it will turn to its list of available challengers in order. Unbeaten contender Arnold “The Cobra” Barboza and former unified WBC/WBO titlist Jose “Jaguar” Ramirez, both Top Rank-promoted fighters, currently sit in the number two and three spots, respectively. It’s also possible that Taylor could occupy one of these positions once his championship status is updated.
Lopez, also known as “The Takeover”, made a name for himself in the sport after some impressive victories. After winning the IBF lightweight title in 2019, he outshone WBA/WBO lightweight titlist Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko in October 2020, establishing his championship lineage at lightweight. Lopez’s reign at lightweight was marred by controversy when George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. managed an upset via split decision in November 2021. Despite a shaky start at junior welterweight, Lopez emerged victorious against Pedro “Roca” Campa and Sandor “Arrasandor” Martin, culminating in his impressive defeat of Taylor.
Lopez’s victory over Taylor shook the division, but with his sudden retirement and title relinquishment, the top spot is once again available. As a result, Lopez leaves behind a legacy of thrilling fights and titles, coupled with a surprise ending, truly shaking up the boxing world in the process.
