After Errol Spence Jr’s ninth-round TKO defeat at the hands of Terence Crawford last Saturday, Shawn Porter expressed his belief that this setback is merely a “wrinkle” in Spence’s career. He is confident that Spence has the mental fortitude to make crucial “adjustments” to his approach in the rematch with Crawford, slated for later this year.
Porter suggests that the loss could be due to Spence not being physically prepared to fight at 147 lbs, having lost too much weight during his training camp. The rumor of Spence starting camp weighing over 200 lbs has also raised concerns, considering the vast amount of weight that would need to be shed for the fight.
Porter emphasizes Spence’s necessity to express his desire for a rematch. “He has to say, ‘I want to move up, and I want to have this rematch,’ and if he doesn’t say that, it means he hasn’t activated that rematch clause,” said Porter.
However, Porter also warned Spence against ballooning his weight with unhealthy eating habits, as it might leave him drained in fights at 154 lbs. As an advocate for the rematch, Porter wholeheartedly believes in Spence’s capacity to bounce back. He further added, “Errol has the ability to make adjustments. He has the ability to come in stronger, especially at 154, and mentally, he’s so strong that I think this is just a wrinkle on his career, and I think he wants to fix that wrinkle.”
