Lamont Roach Jr. says the Gervonta “Tank” Davis rematch is “not looking like it’s happening,” and he’s planning his year without it. Roach boxed Davis to a controversial draw in March for the WBA lightweight title - complete with Tank taking a knee in Round 9 complaining about hair chemicals and referee Steve Willis later opting not to rule a knockdown - but months of quiet from Davis’ side have Roach ready to pivot despite Davis’ recent case dismissal.

The WBA 130lbs titleholder since November 2023, Roach hasn’t defended in over a year and doesn’t intend to cut back down unless it’s for major money or a marquee name. He says he feels strong at 135 and wants to fight before year’s end, stay-busy or otherwise. Jazza Dickens now holds the WBA interim at 130, but Roach is focused north.

Options are on the table. Manager Garry Jonas says both PBC and Riyadh Season have interest, and Roach could land on the reported Sebastian Fundora–Keith Thurman PPV undercard on October 25 in Las Vegas, with featherweight contender Luis Núñez also in the mix for that show. The big target, though, is WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. Roach says they’ve spoken and agreed in principle - just not for 2025.

“Outside of the Tank rematch, the best fight for me and the division is me vs. Shakur Stevenson,” Roach said. “We’ll do it - just likely next year.”
