IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia has expressed interest in a potential fight against Canelo Alvarez, but only if the Mexican superstar is willing to move up in weight. Opetaia believes that Canelo, who has dominated in four weight classes, would be at a significant disadvantage if he stepped up two weight divisions to challenge for the cruiserweight title.

The 6'2" Opetaia would hold a considerable size advantage over the 5'7½" Canelo. Opetaia, who remains undefeated, shared in an interview with Fight Hub TV that His Excellency Turki Alalshikh had inquired about a potential fight between him and Canelo at 175 pounds. However, Opetaia stated that he couldn't drop down from cruiserweight to light heavyweight.

Canelo has previously shown interest in fighting at cruiserweight but hasn't pursued that path recently. Such a move would be a bold response to critics who have pressured him to face David Benavidez. Benavidez has been vocal about wanting to fight Canelo and has persistently called him out.

For Opetaia, the financial incentives are clear. According to Forbes, Canelo was the highest-paid boxer in 2024, earning $85 million. This substantial earning potential explains why top fighters like Opetaia are eager for a bout with Canelo. However, any clash would have to occur at cruiserweight, where Opetaia believes he has the best chance to succeed.
