Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, is confident that Jaime Munguia will deliver a stunning upset against Canelo Alvarez.
As the super middleweight Jaime Munguia prepares for his upcoming bout on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, there is a palpable sense of anticipation. Although Munguia is widely regarded as the underdog, Gomez’s faith in him is nearly tangible. “He seems amazing,” Gomez shared. “Bet the farm on him. We believe in him, and he is gonna upset Canelo.”
Freddie Roach, who trains Munguia, also brings a deep understanding of Canelo’s style to the table, having previously prepared Miguel Cotto for a fight against Canelo in 2015. While it has been nearly nine years since then, Gomez believes that Munguia’s determination and drive will push Canelo, often referred to as the face of boxing, to his limits. Gomez stated confidently, “Canelo is still the king of boxing, but Munguia’s going to put himself on the line.”
The matchup itself suggests that Munguia is not being given enough credit as a potential threat. At 33, Canelo is considered battle-worn, whereas the 27-year-old Munguia has faced less damaging fights despite his extensive professional record. Gomez, who has a rich history in boxing including his time as a matchmaker before becoming president of Golden Boy, knows what makes a great fight and how to set one up. He concedes that the fight will be challenging for both boxers, adding, “It is gonna be an arduous front for both of them.”
