Abdullah Mason is set to take on Giovanni Cabrera on April 5th in a 10-round lightweight bout. This is next significant step up for Mason, who is looking to build on his recent fourth-round knockout of Manuel Jaimes last Friday. Cabrera, meanwhile, aims to bounce back following a seventh-round KO loss to William Zepeda last summer.

It’s not a secret that Mason has been making waves under the Top Rank banner. Against Jaimes, he scored four knockdowns and dazzled fans on a card headlined by Keyshawn Davis vs. Denys Berinchyk. Now, in facing the more experienced Cabrera, Mason will get a chance to test himself against a slicker boxer - one who might not be there to hit as easily as some of Mason’s past opponents.

This fight is part of Mason’s broader push toward a world title. Already ranked in the WBC’s top 15, Mason says he’ll fight anyone at 135 pounds, except his brothers. He’s also eager to show that friendships won’t stop him from taking on fellow lightweights, a stance that subtly contrasts the approach taken by Keyshawn Davis and Shakur Stevenson.
