In the boxing universe, the paths of Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko have been parallel for almost five years, yet they never intersected. Both fighters have dominated their respective arenas in or near the same weight class, but have so far evaded a direct clash. Today, even though they continue to command top positions in the lightweight division, the likelihood of their paths colliding seems slim.
Davis, renowned for his knockout punches, was last seen in the ring ending his rivalry with Ryan Garcia on a high note. Their much-anticipated bout took place on April 22nd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The crowd was expecting a tough challenge for Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) from Garcia, but Davis proved to be overpowering, securing a seventh-round stoppage victory.
Lomachenko, on the other hand, is on the brink of fulfilling a lifelong dream. The Ukrainian is set to challenge undisputed kingpin, Devin Haney, on May 20th. As the clock ticks down to this face-off, Davis' team has confessed that they will be intently following the fight from the first bell. Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis, Davis' head and assistant trainers respectively, hold the view that Haney's youth, size, and skillset might prove too formidable for Lomachenko. Yet, should the former pound-for-pound star manage to recapture his old magic and secure a win, Ellis would welcome the prospect of Davis finally squaring off with him.
When asked to predict the outcome of a potential bout between Davis and Lomachenko, Ellis took a pause, as if envisioning the future. Davis, who has a reputation for being a devastating puncher, has managed to halt most of his opponents in their tracks. Ellis believes that Davis' penchant for quick, pain-inflicting wins would only intensify if Lomachenko chose to engage in a direct exchange with him. “Tank will knock him out in two,” Ellis stated during an interview with ESNEWS.COM, emphasizing the prediction with a repetition.
