In a shocking twist, former UFC champion Francis Ngannou nearly toppled boxing heavyweight Tyson Fury in their “Battle of the Baddest”. Joe Calzaghe, the former undisputed super middleweight champion, expressed his astonishment at Ngannou’s performance, having initially doubted the MMA fighter’s boxing abilities. However, Ngannou not only proved his prowess but also posed a significant threat to Fury, who many consider the top heavyweight in the division.
Despite Fury’s consistent performance, resembling his bouts with Deontay Wilder, Ngannou seemed to be the perfect counter to his style. While Fury had previously exhausted opponents like Dillian Whyte and Wilder with his inside grappling, Ngannou’s sheer strength made such tactics ineffective. The MMA fighter’s resilience was evident when he resisted Fury’s best shots and even landed a powerful left hook in the eighth round, leaving the boxer momentarily stunned.
The fight concluded with a close 10-round split decision in Fury’s favor at Riyadh’s Boulevard Hall, with two judges siding with Fury and one with Ngannou. Calzaghe speculated that Fury’s extended 10-month hiatus since his victory over Dereck Chisora might have contributed to what many perceived as an “off-performance.”
Ngannou’s unexpected boxing skills stole the spotlight, with Calzaghe admitting, “He showed good form, he had good skills, and he was strong.” He even noted Ngannou’s tactic of switching stances, which might have disoriented Fury.
As the boxing world recovers from the unexpected bout, Calzaghe anticipates a different Fury in his forthcoming fight with Usyk. However, Ngannou’s impressive showing against one of boxing’s best surely cements his reputation as a versatile fighter.
