Oscar De La Hoya has expressed serious doubts about Devin Haney’s future in boxing, going as far as to call the former two-division champion "washed up" following his loss to Ryan Garcia in April. De La Hoya believes that Haney might not recover from the beating he took in that fight.
De La Hoya speculated that Haney’s struggles in making the 140-pound weight limit might have played a role in his inability to withstand Garcia's power shots. "Life might be easier for Haney if he competes at 147," De La Hoya said, suggesting that moving up to welterweight could be a better fit for Haney’s natural size. However, he warned that Haney should avoid jumping back into the ring with a top welterweight before testing himself with a tune-up fight.

Interestingly, Haney has yet to confirm which division he plans to compete in next. Meanwhile, his decision to sue Ryan Garcia for fraud, battery, and unjust enrichment - after their no contest result - has added more tension between the two camps. De La Hoya dismissed the lawsuit as "noise," urging Haney to get back in the ring and prove himself instead.
Despite Haney’s legal actions, a potential rematch with Garcia in 2025 seems unlikely. Ryan recently stated that he has no interest in a second fight with Haney, but De La Hoya left the door open, noting that a large enough payday could change Garcia's mind. Still, De La Hoya is not optimistic, calling Haney “a shot fighter” and questioning whether he's capable of making a comeback.
