Promoter Eddie Hearn recently indicated optimism regarding the highly anticipated fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Connor Benn. This showdown, expected to happen before the year ends, has been the subject of much speculation. The prospects of Eubank-Benn intensified after Eubank’s commendable 10th-round victory against Liam Smith, making up for his prior fourth-round technical knockout defeat against Smith in January.
The fight between Eubank, primarily a middleweight, and Benn, a welterweight, was originally on the calendar for last October. The backdrop was the famous rivalry between their fathers in the 90s. However, a twist occurred when Benn tested positive for the banned substance clomifene, resulting in the event’s cancellation. Hearn recently met with Eubank’s promoter, Kalle Sauerland, and conveyed optimism about scheduling the Eubank-Benn fight for December. He mentioned, “We’re talking about a potential December fight. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t happen.”
However, questions remain about Benn’s readiness. Hearn suggested that Benn might appear on a card in either Orlando, Florida, on September 23, or in London on September 30. However, Benn’s ability to fight in England remains uncertain due to his unlicensed status. While he got a boost when an independent panel lifted his provisional suspension, there’s an ongoing appeal against this decision.
Hearn said, “I would like for [Benn] to have a little run out. It’s a massive fight to go into. He’s ready to fight anyone, anytime.” As for the Eubank-Benn fight, while discussions are underway, Hearn admits there’s still work to be done. But with the clock ticking, a deal needs finalization soon to promote the potential December bout effectively.
