Russian light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol has expressed his intention to cement his legacy in his current weight class before considering a move to other divisions. Bivol, who holds the WBA belt in the 175-pound category, deviates from the career path of boxing star Canelo Alvarez, who holds titles in four weight classes, including being the undisputed champion at 168 pounds.

Despite upsetting Alvarez last year by a unanimous decision, a rematch failed to materialize, with Alvarez subsequently signing a multi-bout agreement with Premier Boxing Champions. Bivol, on the other hand, maintains his focus on achieving more in his weight class, stating, “I don’t want to move somewhere until I’ve finished things in my weight class.”

The Russian boxer even hinted at the possibility of moving up to the cruiserweight division, but reiterated that his main priority remains securing all titles in his weight class. However, making this a reality is currently challenged by the political climate and the fact that his compatriot Artur Beterbiev, who is based in Montreal, owns the remaining three light heavyweight belts.

Bivol has also ruled out the idea of demanding a catchweight if he chooses to move up in weight. Unlike Alvarez’s reported stipulation during negotiations with cruiserweight champion Badou Jack, Bivol insists that he would fight at the full weight of the new division. As he continues to navigate his career, Bivol’s next steps will be closely watched by fans and boxing insiders alike.
