Dmitry Bivol, the current WBA 175-pound title holder, is keenly monitoring the potential super middleweight bout between Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo. Alvarez, who holds the undisputed super middleweight champion title, recently signed a multi-bout agreement with Premier Boxing Champions. This deal is likely to set him up against top contenders in the 168-pound category such as David Benavidez, David Morrell, and Demetrius Andrade. However, strong rumors are circulating that Alvarez’s first bout under the new agreement could be against middleweight titleholder Jermall Charlo, who hasn’t been in the ring since June 2021. In such a scenario, Charlo would move up to the 168-pound category.
This potential development has left Bivol somewhat sidelined. He was previously in negotiations for a rematch with Alvarez slated for the fall, but those talks fell through. Regardless, Bivol recently asserted in an interview that he is open to facing Charlo should Charlo triumph over Alvarez, even if it necessitates Bivol to drop from 175 to 168 pounds. Bivol has indicated in the past that he can comfortably make the 168-pound limit. He emphasized that his goal is to gather more belts, regardless of the opponent.
Eddie Hearn, the promoter, recently revealed that he is facilitating a deal for England’s Dan Azeez to go up against Bivol. Additionally, Azeez is also in discussions for a potential bout against Joshua Buatsi, a former Hearn client, which would serve as an eliminator match for Bivol’s WBA belt. Bivol shared his anticipation for returning to the ring in October, indicating that a September bout is currently too late for him to consider.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his next opponent, Bivol remains ready for any challenger in his weight class, affirming his readiness to take on the top 10 fighters in the light heavyweight category.
