After nearly a year away from boxing, WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie (18-0, 14 KOs) is scheduled to make a comeback. Since falling and defeating Michal Cieslak in February, Okolie hasn't boxed. The heavyweight from Hackney is now scheduled to defend his WBO cruiserweight championship in the UK at the beginning of 2023. The WBO has mandated that Okolie will defend the title against David Light (20-0, 12 KOs) of New Zealand.
The WBO revealed on Thursday that Okolie and Light had reached a common agreement. Their sides have agreed that the bout would be held in the UK in March thanks to promoter BOXXER. Also, the fighters asked that the purse bids for their match, which was supposed to take place on Thursday, should be canceled and this request was granted.
"BOXXER is delighted to confirm it will be promoting the WBO world cruiserweight title fight between Lawrence Okolie and challenger David Light. More details, including a venue for the contest, will follow in due course," a spokesperson for BOXXER said.
Okolie, who defeated Krzysztof Glowacki to win the WBO title last year, has twice successfully defended the title during his meteoric climb. And so, in the UK, he has made a name for himself as the top cruiserweight.
