Terence Crawford's coach, Bernie 'Thai Boxer' Davies, insists his fighter has grown into the 154-lb division and will be ready to defeat WBA champion Israil Madrimov on August 3rd at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. This fight marks Crawford's debut at junior middleweight, and Davies believes the 36-year-old is prepared for the challenge ahead.
"From his last camp, he’s grown into a true junior middleweight, and I think he can handle himself," said Davies.
However, questions linger about Crawford's adaptation to the new weight class. Despite his success at 147, 140, and 135 pounds, the 154-lb division presents new challenges. Madrimov, a younger and powerful opponent at 29, represents a significant test for Crawford, who has not fought in over a year.
"We know Madrimov brings a lot to the table with his athletic ability, firepower, footwork, and awkward style. We’re going to map him out, break him down, and figure it out."
Crawford's move to junior middleweight has drawn skepticism, especially considering his age and the competition's intensity. While his coach asserts that Crawford has faced diverse styles, critics point out that he has avoided some of the top contenders in previous divisions. Nonetheless, Davies remains confident in Crawford’s adaptability and readiness.
"Bud is the best. He can turn on a dime and fight on the fly. It’s just getting in proper condition and keep honing his skill."
Crawford's decision to move up rather than face elite welterweights like Jaron 'Boots' Ennis has fueled debate. Despite the challenges, Davies insists that Crawford is a true junior middleweight and is prepared to take on the best in the division.
"We wanted Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora, but we got the toughest junior middleweight. We still got the toughest guy in the junior middleweight division. That’s just the Bud Crawford way."
Ultimately, Crawford’s upcoming bout with Madrimov will be a defining moment in his career. While there are concerns about his size and readiness for the junior middleweight division, his pursuit of greatness and willingness to face top contenders remains unwavering. Whether Crawford can replicate his past success in this new weight class will be determined on August 3rd.
