Conor Benn surprised fans by announcing that he is stepping away from social media. The 27-year-old Brit’s decision - delivered ironically via a post on the very platforms he says he’s quitting - coincides with his newly stated ambition to claim a WBC world title in 2025.

That belt is currently held by Mario Barrios, who claimed the vacant strap in September 2023 and has defended it twice. Rumors have long linked Benn to a potential showdown with Barrios, largely due to the American’s vulnerabilities shown in past losses to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman. From the outside looking in, Benn and his promoter Eddie Hearn could see Barrios as the most direct route to a championship at 147 pounds.

Benn’s career has been clouded by inactivity and unresolved issues over the past two years, making a 2025 title push both ambitious and timely. For Barrios and other top welterweights, the uncertainty surrounding Benn might seem like an opportune moment to test “The Destroyer” in the ring.

Despite the irony of his “social media retirement,” Benn’s real message is clear: he’s “locked in” and ready to resume his climb toward a world title.
