Canelo Alvarez expressed satisfaction over Ryan Garcia's victory against WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney on April 20th.
Alvarez, familiar with Garcia's capabilities from their time together in the gym, wasn’t surprised by the outcome. “I think Ryan has a lot of talent and I’m happy for him,” Alvarez shared. He acknowledged the nervous excitement he felt watching the fight, rooting for his former gym-mate.
After training under renowned coach Eddy Reynoso, Garcia briefly worked with Joe Goosen before joining forces with current coach Derrick James. Alvarez reflected on the potential different trajectory Garcia's career might have taken had he continued with Reynoso, considering the competitive environment and the quality of training available there.
Looking ahead, the boxing community is abuzz with speculation about Garcia's next opponent. Roberto Diaz from Golden Boy Promotions mentioned that a fight against WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez could be significant, possibly occurring at a catchweight of 144 or 147 pounds. But given Lopez's recent controversial win, the timing might not be ideal. A more challenging but potentially rewarding fight would be against Errol Spence, though it poses significant risks.
Devin Haney’s future, on the other hand, appears uncertain. Moving up to 147 or 154 could prove challenging due to his lack of power, and the competitive landscape at these weights doesn’t allow for easy matches. The nature of his recent defeat casts a shadow over his prospects at higher weights, with concerns that even lesser champions might overpower him.
