David Benavidez is sounding the alarm, stating that Canelo Alvarez should be stripped of his WBC title if he doesn’t face him next, contingent upon his victory over Demetrius Andrade on November 25th. While Canelo’s popularity may give him immunity with the WBC, Benavidez hopes the organization will remain impartial. There’s chatter about granting Canelo the ‘Champion in Recess’ title, a move done before with other fighters.
Before thinking too far ahead, Benavidez must defend his WBC interim 168-lb title against Andrade, a formidable opponent. He recently revealed his brother, Jose Benavidez Jr., will be fighting Jermall Charlo in the co-feature fight, which could eclipse the main event in terms of action.
Benavidez continues to voice his desire for Canelo, stating that the public wants the matchup as much as he does. Speculation about Benavidez’s current shape came into question, with rumors suggesting he’s 60 lbs overweight. However, Benavidez dispelled the chatter, confidently stating he's in great condition.
Canelo, on the other hand, seems to be avoiding fights with top-tier opponents in his division, having recently chosen to face Jermell Charlo from a lighter weight class. This type of strategy isn’t well-received by fans who expect champions to face the best in their divisions.
Benavidez’s fight with Andrade is being considered a 50-50 matchup by many boxing pundits. Yet, for Benavidez, every fight hereon is pivotal for his career. With the stakes this high and titles on the line, he aims to prove his worth in the boxing ring, eyeing that pound-for-pound recognition and hoping for a potential bout with Canelo.
