Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith has offered an optimistic update on Anthony Joshua’s future, revealing that the former two-time heavyweight champion is nearing a decision on his long-awaited return. Smith believes the British star will re-enter the ring “in the form of his life” after more than a year away, with a blockbuster fight against Tyson Fury targeted for 2026.

Joshua has not fought since suffering a fifth-round stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in 2024. Smith said the extended layoff has been beneficial. “He’s had time out of the ring - the longest period he’s had since turning pro,” Smith explained. “It’s been perfect for him to focus on himself as he steps back in for what is probably the most important part of his career now.”

Among the options being explored is a major event in Africa. Smith recently traveled to Ghana to assess potential venues for a Joshua fight and came away impressed. “It would be sensational to do an event there, like one that would never be forgotten,” he said. “Walking around the stadium in Accra, imagining 60,000 people inside - it’s something that would be remembered for decades.”

So, what's the point of AJ: Watch

As for the next opponent, Smith suggested that several discussions are ongoing but hinted that 2026 could finally deliver the long-awaited Joshua–Fury clash. “There’s been talk about Tyson Fury coming back, which is great,” Smith said. “I think that’s a fight we will see in 2026. What’s next? Let’s see how the next week or two goes. If he’s going to get out this year, he’ll need to decide very soon.”

Smith added that Matchroom plans to stage multiple major events to close out the year, including a Monte Carlo show on December 6 featuring heavyweight Johnny Fisher. But his confidence remains centered on Joshua’s resurgence. “I’m confident we’ll see AJ back in the best form of his life,” he said. “He needs to be 100 percent when he goes back in - and he will be.”
