The WBC Boxing Grand Prix is back for its second chapter on June 20-21, live on DAZN from the Global Theatre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After a spectacular kickoff event in April, 64 fighters from four weight classes - featherweight, junior welterweight, middleweight, and heavyweight - will compete for a spot in the quarterfinals.
This event, decades in the making and once the vision of the late WBC president José Sulaimán, is a major opportunity that has come to life with the leadership of Riyadh Season and Turki Alalshikh. All eyes will be on the Jose Sulaimán Trophy, which will be awarded to the last fighter standing in each weight class, elevating the Grand Prix to one of the largest projects in boxing history.
Like April's debut, the upcoming 32 fights will last six rounds, and will follow special tournament rules. There has to be a winner in every fight, with tiebreakers based not only on the traditional 10-point must, but also on judges grading each round on how dominant a boxer was with letters. Also included is open scoring, instant replay reviews, and even a 30-second buzzer to add to the excitement.
Gone are red and blue corners. They have been replaced with the WBC's green and gold. Fighters will wear uniforms to match in homage to the belts they are all striving to wear. The VADA drug testing protocols remain, so fair competition will remain intact in all aspects.
This second wave represents more than the next segment of fights; it is an audacious next step in a new tradition - one that is rooted in legacy and now filled with potential.
