Fight Details

The World Boxing Association plants its KO Drugs banner on new soil next month, staging a five-fight card at Benghazi’s Martyrs of Benina Stadium on 8 August. Two bouts carry immediate world-title implications and a sprinkling of star power should ensure the organisation’s anti-drug showcase draws eyes far beyond North Africa.

Top billing falls to a light-heavyweight eliminator between Venezuela’s Albert Ramirez (21-0, 18 KOs) and Auckland-based Englishman Jerome Pampellone (19-2, 12 KOs). Ramirez, The Ring’s No. 6 contender at 175 lbs, flies in on the back of a two-round demolition of unbeaten Michael Flannery in Montreal on 5 June. With the division’s champions otherwise tied up, the 32-year-old southpaw is determined to force his way to a mandatory shot. Pampellone slipped narrowly to Malik Zinad and Conor Wallace in consecutive 2024 IBF eliminators but righted the ship with a one-round blow-out of Thailand’s Plaisakda Boonmalert in February. Victory here would relight his world-title ambitions.

In the co-feature Argentina’s Mirco Cuello (15-0, 12 KOs) meets Mexico’s Sergio Rios (19-0, 7 KOs) for the vacant WBA interim featherweight belt. Cuello, 24, has impressed on three recent U.S. appearances, mixing thumping body work with crisp footwork to climb to No. 8 in The Ring rankings. Rios, also 24, has compiled a perfect record at home in Sonora and now takes a sizeable leap in class.

Olympic silver-medallist Sofiane Oumiha (6-0, 3 KOs) continues his pro apprenticeship against seasoned Nicaraguan Francisco Fonseca (36-4-2, 29 KOs) for a regional lightweight strap, while unbeaten Josue Aguero (13-0, 7 KOs) tackles hard-punching Diego Aleman (20-3-1, 14 KOs) for featherweight honours.
