Eye of the Tiger Promotions refused to scrap its June 5 date, shuffling the deck until an all-action main event emerged: unbeaten Venezuelan southpaw Albert “Superman” Ramirez (20-0, 17 KOs) will face British-born knockout artist Michael Alan Flannery (13-0, 11 KOs) over ten rounds at the Montreal Casino. The switch became necessary when original headliner Imam Khataev accepted a July 12 bout against David Morrell Jr., and ensuing visa snags forced further opponent swaps.
Ramirez, ranked No. 6 by The Ring at light heavyweight, has momentum to burn. Since impressing in Artur Beterbiev’s Moscow camp, he has blitzed Braian Suarez in one round, out-boxed Artur Ziyatdinov, halted former title challenger Adam Deines, and demolished Marko Calic in three. Now 33, the 2016 Olympian sees Flannery as the final stepping stone toward a world-title eliminator.
Flannery is an unknown quantity outside Thailand, but his 85-percent knockout rate and willingness to trade promise fireworks. Only one opponent has heard the fifth-round bell, and the 28-year-old Brit welcomes the leap in class as a chance to gate-crash the crowded 175-pound picture.
Depth bolsters the bill, as Montreal favorite Arthur “The Chechen Wolf” Biyarslanov (18-0, 15 KOs) meets once-beaten Antonio Collado (19-1, 3 KOs) at junior welter. Also heavy-handed light heavyweight Mehmet Unal (12-0, 10 KOs), French super-middle hope Moreno Fendero (10-0, 8 KOs), and prospects Wyatt Sanford and Erik Israyelyan round out a card.
