The WBC light-flyweight title will be back on the line when Panya Pradabsri defends against Carlos Cañizales in Caracas, Venezuela, on August 1. Their first meeting last December in Bangkok ended in a hotly debated majority-decision win for Thailand’s Pradabsri, prompting the WBC to order an immediate rematch - this time on the challenger’s home soil.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed that initial negotiations stalled when neither camp secured promotional backing, until a Venezuelan offer finally satisfied both sides and Pradabsri agreed to travel. Sulaimán called the matchup “a great story,” noting that the series now moves from Thailand to Venezuela after a “sensational” first bout.

Pradabsri (44-2, 27 KOs), ranked No. 9 by The Ring at 108 lbs, first captured a WBC belt by dethroning Wanheng Menayothin in 2020 and defended four times before losing to Yudai Shigeoka. He rebounded with two stay-busy wins and then edged Cañizales to become a two-division champion. At 34, the Thai veteran seeks a far less controversial verdict on the road.

Cañizales (27-3-1, 19 KOs), The Ring’s No. 4 contender, built his résumé with marquee wins in Japan over Reiya Konishi, Bin Lu and Sho Kimura after an earlier draw with WBA titlist Ryoichi Taguchi. Though stunned by Esteban Bermúdez in 2021, the Venezuelan rebuilt with four victories - including a knockout of Ganigan López - before narrowly falling to Pradabsri in Bangkok. Fighting at home, he now aims to erase any doubt.
