Jaime Munguia, the former WBO junior middleweight titlist and current super middleweight contender, is set to face England’s John Ryder, a former title challenger of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This fight, scheduled to headline a DAZN show on January 27 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, is seen as a step for Munguia in his campaign to challenge the division’s top fighters.
Munguia’s ultimate goal is to face Saul Alvarez for the undisputed championship in an all-Mexico clash. However, the WBO has informed Golden Boy, Munguia’s promoter, that such a fight won’t be ordered until the end of 2024 at the earliest. In the meantime, Munguia is advised to stay active, and Ryder, who fought Alvarez once in 2023 and lost by unanimous decision, is his next opponent.

Munguia’s only fight in 2023 was a significant victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, where a 12th-round knockdown helped him secure a unanimous decision win. This match was a notable step up in competition for Munguia, who had faced less challenging opponents in 2022.
Munguia has also been linked to a potential showdown with Edgar Berlanga, another unbeaten super middleweight. However, talks for this match didn’t progress enough for a fight in the last quarter of this year. Both Munguia and Berlanga have been advised to either fight each other or be prepared to remain inactive. Berlanga is now set to face Padraig McCrory in February, suggesting a possible future clash with Munguia, though it is not yet guaranteed.
