Josh Kelly (16-1-1, 8 KOs) returns to action on June 6 in Newcastle, where he’ll face Romanian veteran Flavius Biea (24-1, 12 KOs) in the main event, live in the UK on Channel 5. The bout marks the Sunderland fighter’s continued pursuit of elite opposition after a frustrating period of inactivity and stalled momentum.
Kelly, an Olympian and one of Britain’s most talked-about talents in recent years, looks to extend his win streak and build toward bigger names at 154 pounds. The 31-year-old’s only defeat came in 2021—a sixth-round stoppage loss to David Avanesyan, who himself has been stopped by the likes of Terence Crawford and Jaron Ennis.
Despite Biea’s solid-looking record, the 35-year-old Romanian has yet to beat a top-tier opponent. His most notable victory is a narrow split decision over Juan Jose Velasco, a fighter who’s fallen short against the likes of Regis Prograis, Mario Barrios, and Callum Walsh.
Still, Biea enters the fight with confidence. “I have absolutely no fear in facing Josh Kelly,” he said. “I respect him, but I’m coming to win and take away the big fights he wants.”
Kelly, never short on flair, promises a performance to remember. “This fight will be beautiful and brutal,” he said. His promoter, Kalle Sauerland, echoed the sentiment: “We expect him to make a massive statement.”
