Oscar Collazo (7-0, 5 KOs), the WBO minimumweight champion, meets his challenger Garen Diagan (10-3, 5 KOs) at the iconic Roberto Clemente Coliseum, an event organized by Miguel Cotto Promotions. The last world title fight on the island saw Román ‘Rocky’ Martínez triumph over Orlando Salido by unanimous decision back in 2015. Since then, the only world title bout to take place in Puerto Rico was the women’s fight featuring Amanda Serrano in March 2021.
Collazo’s title defense comes after a landmark victory over Filipino Melvin Jerusalem on May 27th, which made him a world champion in only his seventh fight - a significant milestone for Puerto Rican boxers. Last month, an overjoyed Collazo officially received his WBO title in Puerto Rico, a moment that clearly left him humbled and deeply appreciative.
“I am extremely happy. I see this and I cannot believe it. I have worked very hard to obtain this title. I want to thank my family, my parents, my wife, and my team. To Miguel Cotto Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and the WBO for leading me the way they have. I am a champion and now I will work harder to defend it for the pride of my family, my town of Villalba and all of Puerto Rico,” Collazo expressed.
