Biography
Anthony Yarde, born on August 13, 1991, made his mark in the world of boxing despite beginning his career at a relatively late age. With a professional debut in May 2015, Yarde quickly established himself as a formidable opponent, claiming titles such as the Southern Area light-heavyweight, the WBO European light-heavyweight, and the WBO Inter-Continental light-heavyweight. Despite his first professional defeat in 2019 against Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light-heavyweight title, Yarde’s tenacity and boxing IQ were commended, with Kovalev predicting that Yarde would certainly become a world champion in the future.
Following his loss to Kovalev, Yarde demonstrated his resilience, making a victorious comeback against Diego Jair Ramirez and Dec Spelman. His performance set him up for a shot at the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title, though he lost the fight to Lyndon Arthur in December 2020. However, Yarde bounced back with a powerful victory over Colombian Alex Theran in August 2021, where he defeated his opponent with two strong left hooks to the body.
Yarde continued his journey with significant victories, including a rematch against Lyndon Arthur in 2021, which he won via a fourth-round TKO. In January 2023, Anthony Yarde reached a pivotal point in his career when he won via a seventh-round technical knockout against Artur Beterbiev for the unified WBC, IBF, and WBO titles.
Technical Overview
Anthony Yarde has developed a style that revolves around solid fundamentals of the philly shell defense. Yarde attempts to control distance utilizing a solid jab from the hip, however thus far he hasn’t displayed many other tools with his lead hand to deter his opponents from closing the distance. This may be by choice as it almost seems as though Yarde invites his opponents to come in so he can look for a punch to roll off his shoulder with the Philly Shell and counter with a big counter right hand. Since the Philly Shell is designed for the lead shoulder to be in the way of the same stance opponent’s rear hand, rolling a punch from the rear hand would load up Yarde’s own rear hand to fire back and this is the classic trap Yarde likes to set. When Yarde is pressing the attack, he starts to mix up his jabs with lead hooks around the guard and he also likes to use that hook to counter jabs coming his way. Once his opponent is deterred from closing the distance and also deterred from throwing the jab, Yarde can really do damage as he starts to bring in the big right hand after jabs and hooks.
